Copping Road wends its way along the shoreline, rising and falling with the landscape, cresting - when travelling from the east - at the second bluff. Here, in the brush and almost hidden from view, is a tiny knoll. And in that tiny knoll is an even tinier door. This is the home of Charlotte Livingston Eastern Chipmunk.

Inside, the whirr of Charlotte's hand-crank sewing machine creates a song that ebbs and flows like water. She sits on an old stool perched in front of a large, round window looking out to the lake. Her beautifully gnarled yet nimble fingers move deliberately across the fabric as she finishes quilts for those in need before the cool weather arrives. Rogue lyrics roll around in her head in time with the sewing machine. Charlotte hums along, “Accroches-toi à ton rêve...Hold on tight to your dream....” and smiles knowing that she held tightly to her dream when it needed, but also knew when to hand it over to the world. She pauses, and pats her sewing machine softly: a thank you for allowing her to add her voice to the community, without even saying a word.

Pulling out of the driveway, Charlie Bonaventure Alligator is only a few turns from Alligator Alley, a strip of flat highway running, essentially, from one coast of Florida to the other.  He meets Honey on Recreation Road, right at the nexus of the Alley, and they head on their way.  On separate motorcycles, this ride isn’t about chatter, it is about communion.  Alligator Alley offers a long stretch of got-thinkin’-to-do or got-no-thinkin’-to-do open road, with mile upon mile right through the thick of the Everglades: water, tall grasses, sky.  Occasionally a summer storm will sneak up, but passes as quickly as it came.  Then back to water, tall grasses, sky.  The pair rides for hours.  Not to get anywhere, and not to get away from anywhere.  Just to be.  To enjoy moments of almost meditative nothingness.  

Charlie's motorcycle is a prized, mint, well-ridden 1914 v-twin, still charged with the power of ingenuity and passion.  He spends his mornings tuning up and polishing his affectionately named “Andytown Ambler”, a nod to a town eradicated by the oft misguided collective want for faster, bigger, newer.  While some might call his bike old, he sees it as tried and true, taking him wherever he chooses to go.  And that is the middle of nowhere.  The amazing thing about Alligator Alley is that the middle of nowhere has a way of keeping Charlie in the moment, right there in the now/here.

Henry Gossamer Opossum, appropriately named for his downy-soft fur, is a snuggler. If he has things his way, he'd stay tucked deep in the coziest corner of his sleeping bag all day. Generally, because he was up reading all night prior; he can never seem to put down a good book. It's a habit that has set Henry's circadian cycle all askew and has him bright-eyed clear through 'til dawn. This wouldn't be so bad, but it has meant that his nights are spent all alone. So, Henry decided to open a moonlight library, nocturnal hours only. There, he's stocked the shelves with his savoured collection of children's books (purely for reminiscence sake), with their beautifully rich illustrations and fantastic stories. Experimental and unique books flesh out the collection; it is always a treat to be surprised with each turn of the page. The rest are primarily non-fiction: in pristine condition, with spines whole, pages crisp and nary a dog ear, mysterious stain or margin comment in sight. From Plato to Thoreau, 'The Pig Who Sang to the Moon' to 'Music of the Primes', quantum physics to metaphysics. Henry's library is surprisingly busy with both book lovers and nocturnes. Delighted, he's thinking he'll set up a book club, and an exchange programme. Interesting how such a solitary hobby has offered so much camaraderie.

Murray Maynooth, a very gentle spirit, is a veritable Thoreau on four legs. He lives in an off-the-grid, solar-powered geodesic dome constructed entirely of found twigs whittled to perfection by his old friend Ford Buckminster the Beaver. Being a staunch vegan (his favourite autumnal treat is baked butternut squash with birch syrup), Murray spends his mornings foraging for berries and vegetables and crafting his harvest into wonderfully tasty treats. Afternoons have him leisurely toot-tooting around the neighbourhood on his trusty bicycle. Not simply for the exercise: he loves the social that his daily ride offers. Stopping to chat at nearly every house, Murray always leaves a much appreciated package of preserves. The exchange of ideas is always invaluable, providing the pith for his ever-developing philosophies.
