Copping Road wends its way along the shoreline, rising and falling with the landscape, cresting - when travelling from the east - at the second bluff. Here, in the brush and almost hidden from view, is a tiny knoll. And in that tiny knoll is an even tinier door. This is the home of Charlotte Livingston Eastern Chipmunk.

Inside, the whirr of Charlotte's hand-crank sewing machine creates a song that ebbs and flows like water. She sits on an old stool perched in front of a large, round window looking out to the lake. Her beautifully gnarled yet nimble fingers move deliberately across the fabric as she finishes quilts for those in need before the cool weather arrives. Rogue lyrics roll around in her head in time with the sewing machine. Charlotte hums along, “Accroches-toi à ton rêve...Hold on tight to your dream....” and smiles knowing that she held tightly to her dream when it needed, but also knew when to hand it over to the world. She pauses, and pats her sewing machine softly: a thank you for allowing her to add her voice to the community, without even saying a word.

Mac Ar Aghaidh Linn* Pit Bull Terrier is a saunterer; he savours his daily commune with nature.  The woods speak to his soul: wild and unyielding, yet in the very same moment, still and utterly peaceful. 

Unusually warm temperatures and a lovely breeze draw Mac outdoors.  He strolls along a well-trodden gravel pathway that seems to come from nowhere and end in the exact same spot.  Just beyond the brush, though, he hears a babbling brook. Birds beckon, and scampering squirrels and chipmunks dart in and out of view, enticing him off the trail. 

Pressing through, with a few thicket-scratches and a tumble or two, Mac finds himself smack in a lush bush with verdant greens hosting a profusion of blooms and berries.  Perhaps there was once a walkway here; clearly, no one had ventured this way in quite some time.  Invigorated, Mac forges a fresh path and wonders if footsteps will ever follow his own – each reinforcing this new way; turning craggy path into well marked trail, into bustling roadway, into full on thoroughfare.  He loves the symbolism.  Where there is no path, make one.  May it lead others home. 

*Yes - this is quite the name to pronounce, but well worth the effort.  It is Irish Gaelic and given to our ginger boy with intention.  It translates as 'Let’s Go! Onward To Victory’.  When people call his name, pronounced ‘Mac Air-Eye Ling, they are standing with him in his rally cry.  Please join him by using his name too.  It makes a difference.

Salt and Bale Sheridan Goat always look forward to a hunker-down-and-wait-for-the-weather-to-pass kind of night.  Salt, because he thoroughly enjoys a good movie.  Bale, because she knows Salt thoroughly enjoys a good movie and she loves any excuse to cozy up next to her fella.  And, secretly, for the good snacks that typically accompany a good movie.  Preparing for the evening, she’ll gently arrange the quilt that Charlotte Livingston Eastern Chipmunk lovingly hand-stitched especially for them; prepare a buffet’s worth of tasty treats; and dim the lights.  

In the darkened room, with Salt most assuredly transfixed, Bale relishes eating in the most casual fashion.  Otherwise quite well mannered, for some reason this little rebellion against propriety gives her such joy.  No utensils, no dishes, and (ahem) no manners.  She likes to think that cutlery is optional; serviettes are redundant; and the fuller the mouth, the tastier the meal.  Clearly, Bale is quite comfortable in the relationship, because she knows that Salt knows no one is perfect, and when the volume goes down and the lights go up, Salt will love her still, in spite of, or maybe even because of, her imperfections and idiosyncrasies.

Pulling out of the driveway, Charlie Bonaventure Alligator is only a few turns from Alligator Alley, a strip of flat highway running, essentially, from one coast of Florida to the other.  He meets Honey on Recreation Road, right at the nexus of the Alley, and they head on their way.  On separate motorcycles, this ride isn’t about chatter, it is about communion.  Alligator Alley offers a long stretch of got-thinkin’-to-do or got-no-thinkin’-to-do open road, with mile upon mile right through the thick of the Everglades: water, tall grasses, sky.  Occasionally a summer storm will sneak up, but passes as quickly as it came.  Then back to water, tall grasses, sky.  The pair rides for hours.  Not to get anywhere, and not to get away from anywhere.  Just to be.  To enjoy moments of almost meditative nothingness.  

Charlie's motorcycle is a prized, mint, well-ridden 1914 v-twin, still charged with the power of ingenuity and passion.  He spends his mornings tuning up and polishing his affectionately named “Andytown Ambler”, a nod to a town eradicated by the oft misguided collective want for faster, bigger, newer.  While some might call his bike old, he sees it as tried and true, taking him wherever he chooses to go.  And that is the middle of nowhere.  The amazing thing about Alligator Alley is that the middle of nowhere has a way of keeping Charlie in the moment, right there in the now/here.

Newton Chapel African Elephant was born with a curiosity about music. Understandably really, as he watched the herd respond to seemingly inaudible sound vibrations from many miles away. Or felt the thunderous drum-like beats reverberate to his core when running with the clan. As a toddler, he would rummage through his parents' music collection with pencil in hand, unwinding every cassette tape they had in the hopes of finding the music it held. It’s abstruse and ethereal nature only furthered his fascination. 

To celebrate his second birthday, the herd saved its pennies for something very special. It arrived in a huge shipping crate, weeks early, which gave him plenty of time to investigate. Running his incredibly sensitive sniffer along every crack and seam, Newtie hoped the treasure would reveal itself. It did not. Accompanying this was a second box, especially for him from his parents, very beautifully wrapped, and clearly a partner to the peregrine present.

When his big day arrived, it took Newtie all of ten seconds to break into the box. Silence. He looked at the odd thing, and then at his family and friends, and back at the odd thing. Helping him open the smaller parcel, a collection of classic records, they placed one onto the turntable of the odd thing and flipped a switch.  Newton jumped back in surprise.  Music resounded from the odd thing’s nose.  Instinctively, and to everyone’s amusement, he trumpeted back a reply.  They had gifted him a gramophone and, after explaining just what it was and how it worked, Newtie was in love.

Henry Gossamer Opossum, appropriately named for his downy-soft fur, is a snuggler. If he has things his way, he'd stay tucked deep in the coziest corner of his sleeping bag all day. Generally, because he was up reading all night prior; he can never seem to put down a good book. It's a habit that has set Henry's circadian cycle all askew and has him bright-eyed clear through 'til dawn. This wouldn't be so bad, but it has meant that his nights are spent all alone. So, Henry decided to open a moonlight library, nocturnal hours only. There, he's stocked the shelves with his savoured collection of children's books (purely for reminiscence sake), with their beautifully rich illustrations and fantastic stories. Experimental and unique books flesh out the collection; it is always a treat to be surprised with each turn of the page. The rest are primarily non-fiction: in pristine condition, with spines whole, pages crisp and nary a dog ear, mysterious stain or margin comment in sight. From Plato to Thoreau, 'The Pig Who Sang to the Moon' to 'Music of the Primes', quantum physics to metaphysics. Henry's library is surprisingly busy with both book lovers and nocturnes. Delighted, he's thinking he'll set up a book club, and an exchange programme. Interesting how such a solitary hobby has offered so much camaraderie.

James Willoughby Red Squirrel wanted to celebrate the birthday of his best friend in the whole wide world: Thomasin Healing Evening Grosbeak.  And he wanted to give her a very special gift; one that effectively conveyed the depth of his feelings.  But she was a tiny little bird, and lived in an equally tiny little nest, so there wasn’t room for anything extraneous.  Her utilitarian personality only made presents more of a challenge.  On top of that, the longer he knew her, as more celebratory occasions passed, the list of gift possibilities grew fewer still. So, he thought rather than giving her a traditional gift, he’d give her nothing. Nothing she has to keep, nothing she has to clean, nothing she has to eat, nothing she has to store, nothing she has to do. Nothing. Of course, James thinks presentation is everything, so he packaged his nothing in the biggest, roundest, most beautiful bright red balloon he could find.  It must’ve been three feet around if it was an inch (as he tells it, anyway).  He had it filled with helium and set on his way, quite pleased with himself.  Only a few steps into his journey, however, he got to thinking he might have made a mistake.  With a few more steps, only his tippity toes were still touching the ground.  Approaching halfway, he was 20 feet up, just a little panicked and catching a bit of a breeze. Fortunately, the big red balloon caught Thomasin’s eye and she flew out to tether him.  Rather than helping him land his gift, though, she guided James and the balloon - his grip loosening a little -  around the treetops.  His eyes widened and his ears pricked up taking in everything from this new perspective.  To Thomasin, this really was the best gift ever…not the nothingness but, through the unexpected experience, that he is able to know her deeper and understand her better.  Being truly known by someone is such a beautiful feeling and, for that, she loved him all the more.

Sweet orange cordial, non-alcoholic of course, is one of those drinks that wasn't created simply to quench thirst.  By its nature, it is a drink about time, and all that it brings. Before the sun peeks over the treetops, until the high heat of the day, Miami Clementine Horse picks the juiciest oranges from the tree, smelling and savouring each as she goes.  From time to time, she stops to graze on the soft grass that lines the hedgerows.  Here, in the grove, heady with the scent of petitgrain and in the company of butterflies as they flutter from blossom to blossom, Miami finds her sanctuary. Lunch hour doesn't find Miami at the kitchen table.  Rather, she's nose-in-pot at the stove, methodically stirring a near-magical concoction of herbs and spices and local sugarcane.  Turning off the heat, she peels her oranges and gives each a good squeeze to procure every possible drop of juice.  Combining all in a jug and topping with soda water and ice, she takes some glasses off the shelf - knowing she'll surely have company soon - and heads out to the front porch of her cozy bungalow. Sweet Orange Cordial isn't for chugging or gulping or guzzling.  Nope.  It is meant for sitting a spell, for the telling of circuitous stories that have no apparent point or purpose, for laughing far too hard at things far too silly.  This is a drink for friendship. And boy, could Miami Clementine Horse brew the absolute best ever.

Murray Maynooth, a very gentle spirit, is a veritable Thoreau on four legs. He lives in an off-the-grid, solar-powered geodesic dome constructed entirely of found twigs whittled to perfection by his old friend Ford Buckminster the Beaver. Being a staunch vegan (his favourite autumnal treat is baked butternut squash with birch syrup), Murray spends his mornings foraging for berries and vegetables and crafting his harvest into wonderfully tasty treats. Afternoons have him leisurely toot-tooting around the neighbourhood on his trusty bicycle. Not simply for the exercise: he loves the social that his daily ride offers. Stopping to chat at nearly every house, Murray always leaves a much appreciated package of preserves.
